Pros & Cons

  • The variety of work and knowledgeable colleagues around you. The social club is a great aspect also!
  • The work that the office does is very important for the state. It is reassuring to know that my role has some purpose in contributing to the greater good.
  • The best thing about working at QAO is its people. They are some of the most talented, helpful, supportive and friendly co-workers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Secondly is the variety of work and clients that QAO audits. No 2 days are really alike.
  • Being able to complete meaningful work and contribute to better public services in Queensland. The opportunities to learn and grow with supportive teams.
  • Managers and coworkers are transparent with and reasonable regarding, their expectations of myself and my work. In addition, coworkers are very helpful and very understanding.
  • I don't really have anything negative to say. If I had one gripe it would be that it is time to replace the coffee machines.
  • The work completed on government audits is confidential, and therefore you cannot discuss the exciting and interesting areas of your job with friends or family.
  • Sets the bar too high for other workplaces.
  • Can't think of anything.
  • Lots of last-minute changes, more than necessary potentially.

Diversity
Extremely diverse workplace. Lots of women in senior roles. Organisation is open to all people from all backgrounds, beliefs, genders, and personal preferences.

Satisfaction
My role is very fulfilling. There is a lot to learn about the specific day-to-day operations and practices at QAO -– because of this, I'm adequately challenged and work is never (except some trivial auditing work) boring. With that said, I also feel that the skills I have are being put to good use, and I never feel completely out of my depth when starting tasks and projects.

Management

Management
Managers are extremely accessible and care about your well-being. You are provided with a primary manager who will handle your performance reviews and provide feedback on how you are progressing and how to advance in your career. Internal communication with managers can be informal and all managers prefer for open communication.

Office Work Environment
The office itself is comfortable. There's no shortage of restaurants, cafes, and food places to go to for lunch. A kitchenette on each level means that if you wanted to make your own food instead, you would be able to (and this HAS been done). The dress code is typical and pragmatic for the workplace

The interview process for graduates was multi-staged. We first went through an online test portion, then a group assessment centre, and then a panel interview. After the group assessment centre and panel interview, we had the chance to speak to some of the managers and directors that we would be working with, should we end up making it through the process. I thought this was a good way to break some tension during the process, as other applications tend to be more oblique. The L&D team did a great job of keeping the centre and interview comfortable for the assessors. One thing that I would have been interested in knowing (although, I admit that telling the interviewees defeats the purpose) is why certain tests were used, and what attributes or characteristics the Learning & Development team were looking for in applicants. Mostly out of curiosity though

The pay is above what I thought for an entry position and am happy with it. They have allowances for travel as well to assist with being away from home.

Training
Great support from team members for informal training and well-documented processes have made picking up skills quite easy. Formal training has helped me to understand audit processes and procedures well. I've gained confidence in Excel and PowerBI that I was rusty on before, and become much more proficient in SQL.

QAO has a hybrid working arrangement between the office, home and client site and you can negotiate, within reason, about where you want/need to be based. The hours that you are expected to work are flexible and reasonable
