I suppose that if you put your mind to it, anyone can learn what I do in CapBay.

What's your job about?

Capbay is a P2P financing company that gives out financing to business owners and takes on investors. The Operations department works on the disbursement checking, upon which CapBay “gives out financing”.

In operations, we have day-to-day tasks, weekly and monthly tasks. We attend to new financing requests from clients every day and check for any non-compliance prior to the disbursement. We have weekly tasks especially for clients under special partnership programs with second-car dealers and contract awarders. Also, I was assigned to create and maintain a master list for all the contracts from our clients, which eases the inter-departmental work.

I think that my task during my internship, in general, is quite straightforward. But in reality, the work is much more complex. You will need to understand the terminology and the platform system used by the company. I myself have learned a lot from the job.

What's your background?

I grew up in KL, I always prefer numbers compared to readings and words. I pursue my degree in Islamic Finance in IIUM mainly because I want to avoid any courses related to long reading. In uni, I like joining societies and organizing programs. This has created an opportunity for me to expand my network, knowledge, and to widen my perspective. Experiences and skills that I developed during my studies have equipped me with the soft skills to face working situations better, in terms of communications and work ethos.

I’ve started working in CapBay since March 2022 as an intern for 3 months before getting my first permanent job here in June. It was very exciting for me to work in CapBay because of its supportive colleagues and the good working environment. I’ve heard various negative accounts from my friends who did their internship elsewhere and I am utterly grateful that CapBay is a welcoming place to everyone, including its interns.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I suppose that if you put your mind to it, anyone can learn what I do in CapBay. My background in finance has prepared me to quickly catch up on the business and the industry but they are not a prerequisite to my job.

But it is important to have a deep understanding of the industry, or even in any industry if you really want to grow in the workplace; don’t work mindlessly 24/7 without any real purpose of your job. For me, I like to have a purpose of doing my job, have a goal and a sense of belonging in the company.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

What I enjoy the most about my job is that I get to meet new people, create networks, widen my knowledge, and develop my finance acumen. I’ve been here for almost four months and I am super grateful for the people surrounding me. My team has been really supportive and is eager to help me to catch up on things since I never had any real experience in the work field before. One more thing that I really like is the office view. It shows the combination of a lush green environment as well as the busy residential and commercial areas.

What are the limitations of your job?

The Operations department, for me, carries lots of responsibilities. I was in-charge of making sure of the client compliance and the accuracy of the documents to avoid any false application. In terms of workload, I would say it's manageable. There were harder days for sure. What’s limiting me to perform in the job is the fact that I am a bit shy. I must fight myself every time I need to call clients or paymasters. It took a while for me to adapt to the pressure, gain confidence in order to perform my work efficiently, handle clients and so on.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student

  1. Be yourself; have your own personality and have a good common sense so people recognize and remember you.
  2. Be confident. Always believe in yourself and don't overthink. Trust the process and that you will grow step by step. One day, you’ll look back and appreciate the things you did before.
  3. Try new things and find your own path and passion along the way. Be glad for the gloomy days. To quote Kelly Clarkson, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”
