Application Process & Interviews at Buddle Findlay

Interview was reasonably relaxed and felt more like a general chat about things as opposed to a formal interview.

Of all the interviews I had, I found that BF had the best recruitment process, assigning us with a buddy from the get-go who gave us a call to chat about their experiencing and answer any questions we had. I felt very welcomed from the beginning.

The communication with me was great from my first phone call with HR to my offer. I felt really relaxed through the whole process.

My interview was two 20 minute interviews with a total of 4 interviewers. The first interview was more formal while the second was more casual.

I initially submitted a CV and cover letter, once selected I had a virtual interview. There was support from the firm during the process ie a interview tips workshop and we were assigned "buddies" to support us through the process. However, my experience was not representative of the general process as I interviewed in 2020 while the country was in a lockdown.

Favourite subjects, interests outside of study, goals and aspirations and what I was looking for in a graduate position.

This was a long time ago (I interviewed for a summer clerkship with the firm), and I had multiple interviews at the time, so I am struggling to recall exactly what I was asked. But I know I was asked to tell them about myself, and might have been asked to talk about a challenging situation I had been in and how I overcame it.

Why Buddle Findlay, a bit about myself, how I overcame a challenge in my life, what skills I can bring to the table, etc.

They asked a lot of questions about specific items on my CV - in particular a speech competition I won while in high school. There were also general questions about my interests and expectations of working in the firm and how corporate law firms work in general.

Be yourself! The recruitment team is interested to see who you are as a person. It is helpful to think about potential interview questions before an interview and how you might answer them so you don't get put on the spot.

From what I've heard, the focus is more on who you are as a person and how you will fit into the company rather than how good your marks and extracurriculars are. That being said, anything that sets you apart in terms of interests and actions will be of great assistance.

Sell yourself - what qualities and skills can you bring to the table, what makes you unique and stand out? Remember part time jobs, in whatever field are so valuable, it can teach you customer service, communication, attention to detail, collaboration, etc.

Focus on the values the firm promotes about itself and think about how you embody those. Everyone has the requisite qualifications, so you need to set yourself apart from the crowd by showing how you can fit within the firm's culture.
