We are recruiting Data Generalists and Data Specialists. Which stream best suits you?

Roles filled through the Data Generalist stream can include:

  • Data Analysts
  • Data Engineers
  • Data Managers
  • Geospatial Analysts.

Specialist roles filled through the Data Specialist stream can include:

  • Data Scientists (applied data science, data science developer, data modeller)
  • Statistical Methodologists (Data Collection Methodologist & Mathematical Stats Specialist).

What is the Australian Government Graduate Program - Data Stream?

The Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP) - Data Stream is a program offering recent graduates permanent employment across the Australian Government. The Data Stream is led by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and recruits for data roles on behalf of over 40 Australian Government and Commonwealth agencies across Australia. There will be more than 300 positions across the participating agencies. 

Locations

Positions are available in all major capital cities in Australia as well as Geelong, Newcastle and Townsville.  In 2024, we are expanding our program to include the regional centres of Ballarat, Griffith, Mildura, Orange and Traralgon, where limited positions will be available. There is also the opportunity to work in one of the Academy Campuses at regional Australian university campuses in Newcastle, Darwin, Townsville and Launceston, making it even easier to start your career in data without having to leave your local community.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the 2024 AGGP Data Stream you must:

  • be an Australian citizen at the time of application
  • will or have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor's degree), or higher equivalent by 31 December 2023
  • your most recent eligible qualification has or will be completed between 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2023
  • be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance if required
  • be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.

There is some coding (Python), but my day to day responsibilities are mostly about designing processes and systems around data. There is also quite a bit of manual work that is not so enjoyable (usually in Excel or SAS)

    • The work can be quite demanding at times.

    • Early on there are plenty of opportunities at the APS 4 & 5 to get experience in different team and progress. APS 6 and onward the opportunities become very limited.

    • Some processes are a bit bureaucratic.

    • The pace of work can sometimes be slow.

    • Some office locations are not very convenient.
