The Australian Government Graduate Program Data stream, led by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), is recruiting for over 250 data graduate roles for over 30 Australian Government agencies. Roles are available in all capital cities, Geelong, Newcastle and Townsville.
Data Graduate roles support evidence-based, informed decision making, and work across all aspects of government such as policy development, program management and service delivery. Data Graduate roles cover the full data lifecycle including survey and questionnaire development, data acquisition, data engineering and data analysis, as well as more specialised streams such as data science, methodology, Geospatial analysis and data management.
There are no requirements for any particular degrees or disciplines though people who have undertaken data subjects are more likely to be successful. The backgrounds of our graduates include analytics, actuarial studies, business, commerce, computer science, data management, data science or mining, demography, economics, econometrics, engineering, finance, mathematics or mathematical modelling, machine learning, psychology, risk and intelligence analysis, social sciences and statistics.
Successful graduates will commence in their placement agency in February 2023.

There is some coding (Python), but my day to day responsibilities are mostly about designing processes and systems around data. There is also quite a bit of manual work that is not so enjoyable (usually in Excel or SAS)
I work in an agile team completing programming and devops tasks, with the occasional word or PowerPoint document thrown in.
Day to day, I get to work on super interesting projects, data and tasks and with supportive and friendly people.

The work can be quite demanding at times.
Early on there are plenty of opportunities at the APS 4 & 5 to get experience in different team and progress. APS 6 and onward the opportunities become very limited.
Some processes are a bit bureaucratic.
The pace of work can sometimes be slow.
Some office locations are not very convenient.
