Our Vacation Student program provides university students with the opportunity to explore their degree within our industry and gain exposure to a future career at Alcoa. During your summer 12-week paid placement, you will grow professionally, expand technically, and become part of our community where you will be inspired and challenged daily.
Throughout the program, you will be paired with a senior specialist that will provide you with the hands-on training, mentoring, and coaching to support you in becoming a creative problem solver, helping you towards completing the meaningful projects that you'll be assigned. The best part is that you'll get to experience working in an on-site environment whilst working locally at either of our refineries, enjoying a lifestyle where you can be home each and every night!

About you
We are interested in hearing from curious university students who are:
Currently completing their tertiary degree in a related discipline of the opportunities available. Students in their penultimate year will be highly regarded.
Self-motivated and passionate for their chosen discipline, eager to learn and expand their knowledge.
Capable of working independently with the ability to communicate and engage with multiple stakeholders to obtain a project outcome.
Strong team players with effective time management, organisational and problem-solving skills.
Available to commence end of November 2021 for a full-time 12-week period.

Students are required to travel to and from site each working day and will be based at either our head corporate office in Booragoon, Alcoa's Alumina Refineries (Kwinana, Pinjarra or Wagerup) or Huntly and Willowdale Bauxite Mines which is located approximately 100 kilometres south of Perth CBD.
To be eligible for our Vacation Student opportunities you will be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or have Australian permanent residency. Please ensure this information is clearly stated on your application.

Reviews
I enjoy monitoring the process in my area and optimising where I can. Often little things have high impact when fixed or implemented which I enjoy.
Good mix of long-term projects and day to day work. Site exposure allows for more hands-on work experience and implementation of ideas.
My current role sees me responsible for all engineering in an integral part of the refining process. Ensuring equipment is adequately maintained, creating solutions to problems that arise, and looking at future improvements.

Pros and cons of working at Alcoa Australia
Pros
Getting to rotate between different roles and experience different parts of the company.
Training and career development Great support structure Flexible working arrangements.
Leisure days off are a great perk.
I like the flexibility to work from home twice per week, and the ability to flex hours based on commitments if needed.
The variety of work keeps things interesting and engaging.
Cons
The lack of structure and care for the Graduate Program. Especially with no emphasis to the managers/supervisors to set a mentor and a training schedule.
Sometimes it feels like you're just a number.
Old systems and technology used.
The offices need upgrading as well as the equipment in the offices.
The business promotes inclusion, but they continue to hire and promote people in the business whose values do not align with the message they are trying to convey.
